1/ The LORD and our Shame (Psalm 25:1-3)
2/ Grounded, a Really Really Old Faith (Young Adult Conference in the Heart of Texas)
October 11-13 here in Austin, we’ll talk about our Lutheran view of tradition, and how it helps us navigate these dark days. All the information is here.
Please help spread the word.
3/ Pray for Australia
This Sunday the pastors in the Lutheran Church of Australia begin their meeting. Next week the church meets in synod. There will be a lot discussed, but the main issues will be (again) the question of the ordination of women.
Let’s all pray that the pastors and people will hold on to the clarity of Scripture on this issue.
Here’s my attempt to bring some clarity to the question:
4/ Here She Stands: Meeting Christ in the Divine Service with Dr. John Kleinig
And, speaking of Australia, a few faithful ladies have a podcast exploring orthodox theology. Here’s their interview with Dr. Kleinig on meeting Christ in the Divine Service. For all you faithful lady theologians, please encourage Sonya and Lexi!
5/ The Long Defeat
And, speaking of Dr Kleinig, he pointed out to me a theme in J. R. R. Tolkien: the long defeat.
Galadriel says of Celeborn:
“He has dwelt in the West since the days of dawn, and I have dwelt with him years uncounted; for ere the fall of Nargothrond or Gondolin I passed over the mountains, and together through ages of the world we have fought the long defeat.” (LOTR, p. 357)
Tolkien wrote in one of his letters:
Actually I am a Christian, and indeed a Roman Catholic, so that I do not expect ‘history’ to be anything but a ‘long defeat’— though it contains (and in legend may contain more clearly and movingly) some samples or glimpses of final victory. (Letters, 255)
This is a fascinating idea, and if you are interested you can track it a little further here and here.
6/ Progressivism and the Passion of Faith
Here’s the article: Progressivism: The Fire Sale Philosophy of Hardhearted Prodigals
Here’s a conversation with Dr. Schulz:
7/ Notes on the Church Year
In seminary I took a fantastic class with Pr Pless on the Church Year. I would go back to those class notes often. A few months ago I thought, “I should publish these notes for Pr Pless.” Done!
